Concordat of …an agreement between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII (no longer frenemies) 1.) “Catholicism was the religion of the great majority of the French” 2.) Catholic Church gave up its claims to land that was confiscated after 1790 3.) Gave control of the clergy back to the Pope 4.) The Sabbath was re-established as a “festival” “WHY WOULD NAPOLEON WANT TO REPAIR FRANCE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?”

France controlled area from (French and Indian War) Napoleon takes back the territory in (hopes of building an empire in North America; needed money for invasion of GREAT BRITAIN) Slave revolt in Haiti, war with Britain – France abandons plans and sells territory to the U.S.! (1803) 828,000 square miles ($15,000,000 OR $.03/acre)

4 The Napoleonic Code French civil code established in 1804 (uniform system) (forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, specified that govt jobs should go to the most qualified) Replaced FEUDAL LAWS in France! (over 200 different systems) 1.) Equality of citizens before the law (minus women/kids) 2.) Right of the individual to choose a profession “My true glory is not to have won forty battles… Waterloo will erase the memory of so many victories… What will live forever, is my Civil Code.” Napoleon Bonaparte 3.) Religious toleration 4.) Abolished serfdom
