FIRST Competitions 1992-94 - Nationals in New Hampshire 1995-96 - 1 Regional (NH), Nationals (WDW) 1997 - 3 Regionals, Nationals 1998 - 4 Regionals, Nationals 1999 - 7 Regionals, Nationals 2000 - 10 Regionals, Nationals 2001 - 13 Regionals, Nationals 2002 - 17 Regionals, Championships 2003 - 23 Regionals, Championships (Houston) 2004 - 26 Regionals, Championships (Atlanta)

2003 FIRST Games Study Developed the study for my Technical Writing Class Used a Six Sigma Approach for Analysis and Reporting Information Primarily Relied on Survey distributed online by a link posted on Chief Delphi Discussion Forums Also used informal interviews to develop questions and outcomes

Survey Overview Rating the 1992-2003 Games Amount of interaction King of the Hill Multipliers Autonomous Mode Scoring Beyond a Drive System Roles of Offense and Defense in Qualifying and Elimination Rounds

Survey Results 50 Respondents –29 Students –10 College Mentors –3 Engineers –2 Teachers –3 Team Alumni –1 FIRST Staff –2 Other

Survey Results

Outcomes Positive scoring, reduce the ability to use defensive to de-score Use a king of the hill aspect and multipliers Use elements so that base scoring or multipliers requires more robot development than drive system Spectator-friendly game

2004 Survey Link will be available in 2-3 weeks from Chief Delphi Discussion forums This is another way you can impact next years game!

Watermarks 1993: robots on carpet, 1994: radio control introduced 1995: moved Nationals to WDW 1996: Woodie Flowers Award introduced, Human players added, Rumble at the Rock began 1997: “Mouse that roared” - Beatty/Hammond wins Nationals, River Rage began 1998: FIRST village at Epcot, ChiefDelphi discussion board formed, college scholarships 1999: Alliances, NASA involvement, 3rd partner allowed, Team Forums introduced

More Watermarks 2000: Innovation First controller, score balancing, Dean & Ibot, IRI began 2001: 4 vs 0, Championship divisions 2002: Qualification process for Championships begin, Chairman’s Award Regional Winner, Canadian Regional, remote kickoffs 2003: Championships in Houston, Scholarships at $3M 2004: Championships in Atlanta, qualifications for Championships impact teams, underwater game (ha!)

Future More regionals, less expense Super-regionals are like former Nationals More independent invitationals (IRI, Battlecry, River Rage, etc.) More tie-in with school curriculum ? Indiana proposal needed
