3 How Memory Works (Working Memory) Encoding: Translations of incoming stimuli into a readable neural code  Storage: Retention over time of the encoded material  Retrieval: Recovery at a later date of stored material

4 Long-term Memory Procedural: Stores memory for how tings are done Declarative: Stores explicit information or facts –Episodic: autobiographical information –Semantic: basic meaning of words and concepts Explicit: learned through deliberate effort Implicit: learned incidentally without your awareness

5 Retrieval Recall: reproduction of stored material –Essay type questions Recognition: identification of material as that which you have stored –Multiple-choice type questions
