The ABC’s of Applique Applique: is a craft of stitching or fusing fabric shapes to a background fabric.

What is due November 2? (2 things) 1.Measure and cut quilt squares, using the (light blue) templates. 2.When done, create quilt sample with 4 small 3” squares (white sheet). (make sure they are 3 “ squares) 3.Sew prints to solid (greens or blue). 3.DO NOT WAIT IN LINE FOR THE IRONS---finish your sweater pillow, make a journal entry and/or work on your embroidery sampler. 4.Sew 4 squares together, with seams pressed toward the prints. Objective: You will demonstrate safe machine stitching while constructing a quilt sample, upcycling or applique.

Compare hand stitches with machine stitches Review Instruction Brochure (Sign Up) Applique Powerpoint/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c 91orQ82Xnw Stitch 2 machine appliques (zig zag and satin) Stitch 2 hand appliques (basting, straight, blanket, applique or other decorative stitch) Take pictures-turn into Google Classroom Be sure patchwork seams are pressed (toward darker fabric

When pressing the seams of patchwork squares, which direction do you press and why? 1.Cut quilt squares, using the (light blue) templates if needed. 2.Pin patchwork squares together 3.Sew-----be sure you line up the corners and sew straight 3.Finish 4 squares if necessary. 3.DO NOT WAIT IN LINE FOR THE IRONS---finish your sweater pillow, make a journal entry and/or work on your embroidery sampler. 4. Finish your pillow if you still have work to do. Objective: You will demonstrate safe machine stitching while constructing a quilt sample, upcycling or applique.

Patterns and Stitches Smaller patterns and pictures are fused and sewn to a larger background fabric Stitches can be invisible or decorative

It can be as simple as a single shape or as complex as a landscape scene

The Versatility of Applique Many creative options to choose----from hand applique to machine applique. Many creative options to choose----from hand applique to machine applique. Appliques can be applied to just about anything from aprons and bibs, bags or potholders to dresses, quilts, t-shirts and much, much more! Appliques can be applied to just about anything from aprons and bibs, bags or potholders to dresses, quilts, t-shirts and much, much more!

Terms To Know BACKGROUND FABRIC: the fabric to which pieces are attached. (Select a stable fabric) APPLIQUE STITCH: an invisible hand stich used to secure the edges of applique shapes to the background fabric. Also known as BLIND STITCH

Applique Fabric : fabric which is attached to the background fabric. Select a fabric that is compatible in care and weight with the background fabric. Light or medium-weight fabric woven fabrics such as calicos, pixieand gingham are recommended for beginners. An array of cotton fabrics gives many choices in patterns and colors choices in patterns and colors

Applique Fabric (con’t) To prevent fraying, use adhesive transfer paper and stitching along the edges. Felt doesn’t fray so small designs keep their shape

Stabilizer: the material placed between the fabric and feed dogs during machine applique It helps you achieve more consistent stitching and prevents the back- ground fabric from shifting or bunching as you sew.

FUSIBLE WEB: A paper-backed adhesive product that allows you to permanently affix applique pieces directly to the background fabric.

SEAM ALLOWANCE : the fabric between a seam and raw edge It is the amount of fabric that is turned under when preparing or stitching the applique-usually ¼”

Template: An exact duplication of a pattern piece. Applique templates generally do not include a seam allowance. They are usually made of plastic

Satin Stitch: A narrow zigzag stitch done on the machine. It holds the edges of the applique shapes in place. The stitch should be wide enough to cover the edge of the applique fabric and hold it securely.

Basting: Temporary hand stitches that will be removed later.

Hand Applique 1.Plastic Templates can be used to prepare fabric shapes for traditional basted appliques 2. Place the template face up on the right side of the fabric and trace around the template 3. Cut out the appliqued fabric shape, adding a scant 1/4” seam allowance around the markings. markings.

Hand Applique (con’t) 4. To baste it in place, turn the seam allowance under, using the invisible stitch, so that the marked line disappears to create a finished edge 5. While you baste, keep the right side of the fabric facing you so you can see the markings are completely turned under and not visible. 6. Press applique piece, if necessary and pin to background fabric 7. Attach with applique stitch of your choice.

Machine Applique 1. Fuse wonder under to the back of applique fabric. 2. Cut out the applique design and fuse to the background fabric. 3. Use the embroidery presser foot because the underside is grooved allowing the satin stitch to pass under the foot easily.

Machine Stitch (continued) 4. Set the machine to satin stitch, a zigzag with a short length and a medium to wide width. (The stich length should be short enough so that no fabric shows through but not so short that the stitches pull up. 5. The stitch width should be wide enough to cover the edge of the applique cover the edge of the applique 3/4 of the stitch should be on the applique

Machine Stitch (con’t) Cut a piece of stabilizer paper larger than the design. Pin the stabilizer paper to the WRONG side of the background fabric. Satin Stitch the applique to background fabric keeping ¾ of the stitch on the applique.

Topstitch Applique May be used on hand applique with the fabric turned under May be used on hand applique with the fabric turned under For machine Top Stitching, set the machine to 12 stitches per inch and stitch slowly to maintain an even distance, sewing around the applique about 1/16” from the fold. For machine Top Stitching, set the machine to 12 stitches per inch and stitch slowly to maintain an even distance, sewing around the applique about 1/16” from the fold.
