2 Vital Statistics in community planning:  Primary records of the number of births and deaths in a population.  Other factors, –Number of marriages –Causes of death –By age groups  These records help us to calculate birth and death rates to determine trends  Earliest known system of Vital Statistics – China.

5 2. CANSIM (Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System)  Statistics Canada’s database of time series  Covering a wide variety of social and economic aspects of Canadian life  Containing more than 38 million time series regrouped in approximately 2,800 tables

6 CANSIM II (via CHASS and via E-STAT):  Current and historical time series data for Canada  38 million time series  Production, sales, trade  CANSIM II via CHASS--Updated weekly  CANSIM II via E-STAT—Updated annually

7 CANSIM I  The version before CANSIM II  Has not been updated since June 1 st, 2002.

8 Restrictions on use  CANSIM via CHASS: licensed for use by the U of S faculty, staff and students for academic research and study  CANSIM via E-STAT: licensed for use by students in schools and colleges and universities

9 3 Ways to Get CANSIM – Only 2 are Free  Yes  No $$$ START at the Data Library Site (especially if you’re off campus)
