2 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Aims and outcomes Participants to:  know the early learning goal in relation to reading  understand how to enhance their work with children as they develop their pre- reading and reading skills  know how the physical environment and resources support children in developing their understanding, skills and abilities in reading  gain confidence in planning for this area of learning and development for children of different ages and stages. 2

3 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER In advance Before the training session you will have read  Before the training session you will have read: Handout 1: What quality looks like in practice: Literacy: Reading  If you have not read the handout, please inform the trainer. 3

4 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Step 1 (5-10 mins)  Read the early learning goal relating to reading: ‘Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.’  Think about what the early learning goal means for you in practice.  Working in pairs, list five examples of interesting pre-reading and reading activities which you do in practice and share them with the whole group. 4

6 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Step 2 (10 mins) In groups of 3 or 4, discuss the following questions: Under 3s  Have we considered making family books to act as link between home and the setting and to develop early reading skills?  Do all staff make stories interesting for children, using voices and expressions in different ways, adding drama, excitement or showing different emotions? 3-5s  How well do we encourage pre-reading skills and knowledge in a playful way - sound games, rhyming words, alliteration, tongue twisters, using different voices, puppets and props to go with stories and rhymes?  How confident are we in knowing how, and when, to introduce systematic synthetic phonics to children of differing abilities? 6

8 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Step 3 (5-10 mins)  Thinking about what you read in Handout 1 and what you have learned today, work on your own to plan a new reading activity to use with the children you work with.  Share your ideas with a colleague who works with a different age range 8

9 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER After the training: Part 1  After the training use Handout 3: Individual Action Plan to plan three or four things you will do in the next two weeks to improve your practice in Literacy: Reading.  Give your action plan to your trainer within the next seven days. 9

10 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER After the training: Part 2  Use Handout 2: Environment Audit to check whether or not you have a wide range of good quality, age-appropriate books to share with the children.  Make a note of any books you would like to buy or borrow from the local library. List any which need to be replaced.  Hand in the completed audits to your trainer. 10
