What Parents Need To Know For Middle School

 School starts at 8:35 and ends at 3:15.  Students will have a total of 7 classes: English, math, science, social studies, PE, reading and an elective.  Every student is required to purchase an agenda book at the beginning of the school year. Students will use this to write their homework assignments down, tests and projects. Hall passes are located in the back of the agenda books. Every student must have a pass when they travel from one destination to another.

 Students will have homework for every class.  Students will have homework on the weekends.  Approximately 15-30 minutes should be allotted for each subject.  If a student does not complete their homework, it will cause their grade to be lowered.

 All students must complete class assignments.  Please remind your student to write their first and last name on their paper so they can receive credit for the completed assignment.  If there is an assignment that the student does not understand, please have the student ask the teacher after class.

 Students and parents may check grades and assignments in Power School for each subject.  Interim grades will be located on Power School. These grades will not be sent home.  Report cards will go home after each nine weeks. The last report card will be mailed home.  If you notice that your student is having difficulty or obtaining failing grades’ please contact the teacher.

 If the student is sick, the parent must call the school and report it. Then have the student to bring in a note on the day the student returns to school and give the note to Mrs. Johnson, the attendance secretary.  Missing 5 days or more from school will initiate an attendance meeting with school social worker and the school counselor.  Make sure your student comes to school on time. Being tardy frequently will cause the student to miss valuable information.

 If your student is going to be out of school for three days or more, please call school counseling at 515-1105 to request the work.  Teachers get a 24 hour notice and the work is brought to school counseling for the parent to pick up.  The completed assignments can be returned to school counseling which will be distributed to the teachers.

 A parent may request to meet with the teachers at any time during the school year. You do not have to wait until parent-teacher conferences.  If you want to sit in the classroom, there is a form you must fill out before the visit and the teacher must be informed of the day you are visiting the class.

 Please get a combination lock and have your student practice opening the lock.  Sixth graders biggest frustration is the ability to open a lock. Tears will flow faster over a locker not opening than anything else.  Students will receive their locker number and combination from their homeroom teacher.

 We have football, soccer, girls basketball, boys basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, track, baseball and softball.  All students participating in sports for next year must have a physical dated May 1, 2015 or after.  After the first nine weeks, grades can keep a student from participating with any sports team. Students must have a 2.0 grade point average to participate.

 The fee to rent a computer is $50.00  Fees for the entire school year should not be more than $100.00.  All students are expected to get a computer. Students use computers to complete assignments and to take tests.  SOL tests are completed on the computer.

 The 6 th grade counselor for 2015-2016 will be Awanta Miles. The CRC counselor is Jenny Hubler.  The 6 th grade administrator is John Elmore.  The principal for Wilder is Solomon Jefferson.  The attendance secretary is Linda Johnson.  The bookkeeper is Robyn Hagan.  The registrar in school counseling is Kimberly Jones.

 Henrico County is still using Power School to select classes for 2015-2016.  Please enter the following website: https://sis.henrico.k12.va.us/public/home.html  You will need to know your student’s ID number. This is located on the report card or you could get if from school.

 Thank you for coming tonight.  Now you will hear about the CRC Program- College Readiness Program.  You will also receive notes from a power point on how to accept the recommendations for your student’s classes.  If you have any questions, please call the elementary counselor.
