5 Lesson 1 Meaning of Educational Technology
What is Technology? Technology comes from the greek word techne which means craft or art. Technology, therefore, refers to the art or craft of responding to our educational needs. Technology is not just machines. It is a "planned, systematic method of working to achieve planned outcomes - a process not a product. Technology, also refers to "all the ways people use their inventions and discoveries to satisfy their needs and desires

6 Meaning of Educational Technology
What is educational technology? Educational technology is the development, application and evaluation of systems, techniques and aids to improve the process of human learning. (cited by Lucido, 1997) It is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of processes and resources for learning. (Association of Educational Communication and Technology)

7 Educational Technology discloses in common that it encompasses the use of instructional media as part of the complex process of teaching and learning and stresses its ultimate goal of improving any teaching-learning situation. It consists of the designs and environments that engage learners and reliable technique or method for engaging learning such as cognitive learning strategies and critical thinking skills. (David H. Jonassen, et,al, 1999)

10 Other Terms Associated with Educational Technology
Technology in education is "the application of technology to any of those processes involved in operating the institutions which house the educational enterprise". It includes the application of technology to food, health, finance, scheduling, grade, reporting and other processes which support education within institutions. (David H. Jonassen, et.al, 1999)

11 Other Terms Associated with Educational Technology
Instructional Technology refers to those aspects of educational technology that "are concerned with instruction as contrasted to designs and operations of educational institutions. (support with video) Technology integration means using "learning technologies to introduce, reinforce, supplement and extend skills" (William, et.al., 2000)

Educational media are channels or avenues or instruments of communication. Examples are books, magazines, newspapers, radio, television and Internet.

Educational technology is not a concept of the 21st century. It has gone a long way since civilization begin. The highlights in the history of educational technology will be shown using video.

Activity No. 1. Read the paragraphs which will be presented and then come together in small groups to discuss your answers to the question: Is technology a boon or a bane? Stated more simply is it a blessing or a curse? Activity No. 2. Study the comic strips. Find out what it depicts about the consequence of the use of technology on relationships, learning and life.

the learner is made to accept as Gospel truth information they get from the internet the learner surfs the internet for pornography the learner has an uncritical mind on images floating on televisions and computers that represents modernity and progress. the tv makes the learner a more spectator not an active participant in the drama of life

the learner gets glued to his computer for computer-assisted instruction unmindful of the world and so fails to develop the ability to relate to others. we make us of the internet to do character assassination of people whom we hardly like because of our cell phone, we spend most of our time in the classroom or in our workplace texting we overuse and abuse tv or film viewing as a strategy to kill time

we use it to help our students and teachers become caring and learn to do the following: relate; think; reflect; and analyze.
