1 440-LC Fraction Collector
P. van Poppel – Field Support Specialist October 2009

2 Overview Introduction to 440-LC Operation and Control Installation
Options Usage Operation and Control Installation Problems 440 is related to SPS3 auto sampler used in AA, ICP-ES etc. Most of the parts are the same. Main board is also same except for firmware.

3 440-LC Fraction Collector
Theta axis Z axis slide Retaining ring Probe mounting block Ridged mount nut on the probe assembly Ferrule holding the metal probe Probe Rack Rack location mat Simple installation through RS232. Requires calibration of all positions. This is important, as the rack location mat is a little flexible and the tube positions are not set in concrete.. Requires delay volume determination to ensure best decision making in timing.

4 440-LC Fraction Collector Options
High-flow kit including high-flow PEEK™ probe, diverter valve and funnel rack High-flow probe Funnel rack USB to RS232 converter Various racks: 90 position x 13 mm OD (7 mL) rack 60 position x 16 mm OD (13 mL) rack 40 position x 20 mm OD (25 mL) rack 24 position x 25 mm OD (38 mL) rack 21 position x 30 mm OD (50 mL) rack Rack overlay for 40 position rack, 18 mm OD Rack overlay for 60 position rack, 16 mm OD

5 Specifications Large fraction capacity
Wide flow rate range up to 800 mL/min Compatible with range of HPLC detectors Simple, intuitive software control Compact footprint (600 x 400mm) Diverter valve can handle up to movements before replacement is due.

6 Usage The Varian 440-LC is fully compatible with Galaxie software.
Real-time fraction collection marks are displayed

7 Control Standalone control, no need for Galaxie. To operate manually or with third party software.

8 Installation Connect up power Connect serial cable between PC and F/C
Calibrate tray Save coordinates Install software Determine delay time

9 Problems Fractions not correlating to the tick marks on the Galaxie software Liquid is not delivered to the tubes Probe hits the top of the tubes or is not low enough Error status LEDs are showing an error The fraction collector shows offline in Status Overview The arm is not moving correctly in the X, theta or Z axes Fraction collector is not initializing CPU activity LED (side of fraction collector) does not flash. Host communications LEDs do not flash during communication
