Rocks

Add to your notes: Types of Rocks

Discuss with your partners things you already know about rocks! When you are done discussing, move on through the powerpoint!

Rocks are divided into 3 types… IGNEOUS SEDIMENTARY METAMORPHIC

Add to your notes: SedimentaryMetamorphicIgneous Types of Rocks

Igneous Rocks Other Key Facts Information: The texture depends on how fast the rock cools –Quickly cools- smooth texture –Slowly cools- bumpy or rough texture They are very hard and can have crystals Examples are basalt and granite Definition Information: Igneous literally means “From Fire” Considered “Parent Rock” as all other rocks form from igneous rocks These rocks were made from cooled magma or lava Intrusive igneous= from magma Extrusive igneous = from lava

Discuss…. ….the differences between the igneous rocks made from magma and the igneous rocks made from lava.  What are they called?  Which will cool faster?  Where will they form?  Etc!

Sedimentary Rocks Other Key Facts Information: Types of sediment: sand, shells, pebbles, bits of rock, minerals, organic (from living things) matter, or fossils They are soft and crumbly, made of layers Examples are sandstone, limestone and shale Definition Information: These rocks are made from layers of sediment (weathered rock) that has been cemented together.

Discuss… …how would the type of sediment affect the appearance of the sedimentary rock they create?  Colors?  Texture?  Location?  Etc!

Metamorphic Rocks Definition Information: Metamorphic rocks are formed when an existing igneous or sedimentary rock comes under extreme heat and pressure (“squeezing”). These rocks have literally “Metamorphosed” (changed). –That means they started out as one thing and became something completely new and different

Metamorphic Rocks Other Key Facts Information: *Two groups based on internal structure:  Foliate- bands or zones of same material  Non-foliated- no visible bands or zones *They are formed underneath the surface of earth *Examples are marble and slate Non-foliated Foliated

Discuss…. ….How are metamorphic and sedimentary rocks similar? Different?

The Rock Cycle Click here Click here for an interactive rock cycle diagram Complete your rock cycle notes Hover over the terms & record them on your rock notes Click on the animations & take notes in the margins

Test Your Knowledge Click here Click here to test your knowledge of how rocks change

Turn Your Paper Over!!! Don’t go to the next slide until everyone is ready!

Now, try to complete this rock cycle web without looking at your notes!
