10 Scheduling/Course Selection Process The course selection process for the 2016 – 2017 school year will take place during the 2 nd semester (around February).  Teachers in core subject areas will make recommendations for the upcoming year  Parents and students may waive into another level  Students select their electives and alternate choices  Don’t PANIC

18 HOPE & Zell Miller HOPE 3.0 Core GPA as calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA College. Zell Miller Scholar Program Students must graduate with a 3.7 GPA as calculated by the Georgia Student Finance Commission and have a 1200 SAT (math & critical reading) or a 26 on the ACT. 19 HOPE Rigor Requirements  Beginning with the Class of 2015, there are HOPE Rigor Requirements for both the HOPE Scholarship and Zell Miller Scholarship. Due to the continued updates made to the HOPE Scholarship, it is in the student’s/family’s best interest to consult directly with Georgia Student Finance Commission. They are the organization that issues, approves, and sets the standards for the scholarship, therefore they can most accurately define the qualifications. 22 Social Networking  95% of teens between 12 – 17 are on Social Networking Sites  81% of online teens have some kind of social media  Recent findings have shown (October 2014- March 2015):  71% have Facebook  33% have Twitter  52% have Instagram  41% have Snap Chat  91% post photos of themselves  71% post school name  71% post city/town they live in  82% post birthdates

23  Things to know:  Know your students log in and password  Advise them to be selective of material that they post  26% of college admissions reps report to searching out applicants on social networking sites- this number is rising!  Use social media to your advantage

24 Work In Progress (WIP)  9 th grade is the beginning of academic & extracurricular records that colleges will use for admissions decisions  Be the best that you can be – raise the bar and don't be afraid to challenge yourself  Have a plan of attack – think with the end in mind  Get involved!!! Colleges are looking for students that get involved and demonstrate leadership  Be realistic – don't bite off more that you can chew
