2 Preposition A word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in a sentence Example: Your ring is on the sink. Your ring is in the sink. Your ring is under the sink. Your ring is behind the sink.

3 More Examples The gift is for him. The gift is from him. The gift is behind him. The gift is near him. The car is like the truck. The car is by the truck. The car is with the truck. The car is underneath the truck.

4 Snoopy’s Doghouse Preposition Trick:
Many prepositions can be described as somewhere you can be or something you can do to Snoopy’s doghouse.

5 Object of the Preposition
The noun or pronoun following a preposition Example: Your ring is on the sink. Your ring is in the sink. Your ring is under the sink. Your ring is behind the sink.

6 More Examples The gift is for him. The gift is from him. The gift is behind him. The gift is near him. The car is like the truck. The car is by the truck. The car is with the truck. The car is underneath the truck.

7 Numbers of O.P.’s There can be multiple objects of the preposition
Example: My house is between Tolono and Philo. The commercial came on during The Big Bang Theory and Two Broke Girls. My homework is beneath my English binder and my Science textbook.

8 Prepositional Phrase Phrases include the preposition, the object of the preposition and all descriptive words (adverbs and adjectives) My aunt rode home in a boat. My aunt rode home in a bright red speed boat.

9 Multiple Phrases No limit to the number of prepositional phrases in a sentence. The girl lounged in a chair on her boat in the waters of Lake Michigan before she returned to her condo in downtown Chicago. How many prepositional phrases are in the above sentence?

We all got into the car. Sammy and I ran around the track for practice. Uncle Leo gave a gift to me for my birthday. The truck flew down the road. Three girls played volleyball in the sand on the shore of Chesapeake Bay. I played for the title of Queen Bee.

Cultured pearls differ somewhat from natural ones. Both kinds of pearls are formed inside real oysters. The oyster produces a pearl around sand or another particle. In natural pearls the sand or other particle enters the oyster by accident.

For cultured pearls the particle is put into the oyster. Natural pearls were too expensive for most people. After World War I, cultured pearls became popular. Today cultured pearls are commonly set into earrings, necklaces, and other jewelry.
