2 Health and Teens Health in The Past In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s… the leading causes of death were infectious diseases… INFECTIOUS DISEASE is a disease caused by pathogens…and is passed from person to person. Examples of infectious diseases would be polio, TB, pneumonia, and the flu… Health Today Infectious Diseases are under control, because of better living conditions and medicine… Most health problems today are related to the way we live…LIFESTYLE LIFESTYLE DISEASES are diseases caused partly by unhealthy behaviors and partly other factors…like diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

3 Health Risk Factors Risk factors are the factors that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems. Controllable Risk Factors are risk factors that you can do something about,ie…physical activity, smoking, weight, and diet. Uncontrollable Risk Factors are factors that cannot be changed, ie…age, race, gender, heredity.

4 Risk Factors and Your Health Teenage causes of death in the United States: 1. Motor vehicle accidents 2. Homicide 3. Suicide Adults between 19 and 65 cancer is the leading cause of death. Older Adults over 65 heart disease is the leading cause of death.

5 Six Health Risk Behaviors 1. Sedentary Lifestyle: Not being physically active on a regular basis. 2. Alcohol and Drug Use: liver cancer, heart disease, and brain damage can be caused by alcohol abuse. Car accidents, physical fights, depression, suicide, mental disorders, and sexually transmitted diseases can all be linked to drug and alcohol abuse. 3. Sexual Activity: health problems such as HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, and unwanted pregnancy.

6 Six Health Risk Behaviors 4. Behaviors That Cause Injuries: As mentioned earlier the causes of death for teenagers are vehicle accidents, other accidents, homicide, and suicide. 5. Tobacco Use: Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. 6. Poor Eating Habits: Your eating habits can either increase or lower your chances of developing many diseases.
