Interpreting Data Unit 1

How to Start 1. Start on outside: a) X & Y-axis b) explain what graphs tell you 2. Inside Graph: a) Look for trends in graphs b) increasing, decreasing, same 3. Find IV & DV

Interpreting 1. How can data answer question that is being investigated 2. Compare info from data to what you already know

Example 1 Graph the data table shown Title the graph Make a hypothesis Make 3 points of analysis about the graphed information

Title of Example 1 The temperature in degrees Celsius as a function of the depth below the Earth’s surface.

Hypothesis for Example 1 If the depth below Earth’s surface increases, then the temperature increases because the Earth’s core is extremely hot. Therefore, the deeper you go the hotter it should become

Trends in Example 1 Constant increases in temp. as travel further below Earth’s surface Support: Depth :1 km Temperature: 50 o C Depth: 4 km Temperature: 150 o C

Predictions Could you use the data about temperatures beneath Earth’s surface to predict the temperature at 9km beneath Earth’s surface?

Independent Assignment Complete Interpreting Data pg 52: Deer and Wolf Population, on a separate sheet of paper When finished, staple Earth graph and Deer and Wolf Population to worksheet Hand in to the bin Take out Homework (yellow worksheet)
