1 Line graphs are a powerful tool in science.
1-5: Graphs in Science Line graphs are a powerful tool in science.

2 Anticipatory Set A graph is a drawing that displays information in the form of a line or with different-sized bars. A newspaper sometimes uses graphs to show temperatures over a period of time or rainfall through a week. Multiplication Division

3 California Standards Science Standard 8.9.d: Recognize the slope of the linear graph as the constant in the relationship y=kx and apply this principle in interpreting graphs constructed from data. Science Standard 8.9.g: Distinguish between linear and nonlinear relationships on a graph of data.

4 Input graph: a “picture” of your data.
horizontal axis: (x-axis) graph line that runs left to right. vertical axis: (y-axis) graph line that runs up and down. origin: (0,0) the point where the two axes cross coordinate: a pair of numbers used to determine the position of a point on a graph.

5 Input data point: the point showing the location of an intersection.
line of best fit: smooth line that reflects the general pattern of a graph. linear graph: a line graph in which the data points yield a straight line. slope: the steepness of a graphed line. nonlinear graph: a line graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line.

6 Input Line graphs are used to display data to show how one variable (the responding variable) changes in response to another variable (the manipulated variable). Volume of Water (mL) Boiling Time 500 7 min 48 s (7.8 min) 1,000 16 min 37 s (16.6 min) 1,500 26 min 00 s (26.0 min) 2,000 33 min 44 s (33.7 min) Manipulated Responding

7 Input Steps to Plotting a Line Graph… Draw the axes Label the axes
Create a scale Plot the data Draw a “line of best fit” Add a title

8 Input A line of best fit emphasizes the overall trend shown by all the data taken as a whole.

9 Input & Modeling The slope of a graph line tells you how much y changes for every change in x. Points (20,10) and (50,25) Slope = 25 km – 10 km = 15 km = 0.5 km/min 50 min – 20 min 30 min

10 Input Line graphs are powerful tools in science because they allow you to identify trends and make predictions.

11 Check for Understanding
What is a pair of numbers used to determine the position of a point on a graph? coordinate What is a graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line? A nonlinear graph

12 Guided Practice Independent Practice Answer #2 & 5 Finish the
2. trend 5. g Finish the worksheet.

13 HOMEWORK EXTENSION Write a detailed SUMMARY of the section and complete the UNANSWERED QUESTIONS section of your notes. Choose two of the remaining Depth & Complexity ICONS in your notes and explain how they relate to this section.
