15 Income and Homeownership in America  Median Income Median Income Published: April 27, 2000 The percentage of Americans who own their homes rose to a record 67.1 percent in the first three months of the year, as ownership among blacks and inner-city residents also climbed to all-time highs, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Homeownership among blacks rose to 47.8 percent, from 47.3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, the department said. Ownership in the nation's central cities increased to 51.2 percent, from 50.9 percent.
