Supple Interfaces Workshop Designing and evaluating for richer human connections and experiences Katherine Isbister* and Kia Höök^, organizers *Rensselaer (RPI) ^Swedish Institute of Computer Science

Supple Interfaces Introduction What is a ‘supple interface’? An interface which aims to build richer connections between people as well as deeper emotional experiences through interface. E.g. affective interactive systems, games, relationship-building systems. Why single them out? Emphasis on the quality of experience rather than outcome often involves subtleties of the dynamics of engagement with such interfaces and with others through these interfaces. Results in design challenges and values that we could address as a community.

Supple Interfaces Agenda overview Morning: 9.00 Opening remarks and plan for the day 9.10 Session one -- theory 9.45 Session two -- Steve Swink leads an "experience" session 10.30 Coffee break 11.00 Session three -- application domains 11.30 Discussion on sessions so far 12.00 Session four -- evaluation 12.30 Lunch

Supple Interfaces Agenda overview Afternoon: 14.00 Session five -- demo session, 5 minute intro for each 15.30 Break 16.00 Session six -- breakout group work 17.20 Re-gather to present group work and create joint poster 18.00 End

Supple Interfaces Session One -- Theory Olivier Bau: Combining Research Strategies for Exploring Expressive Interactions Wendy A Kellogg, Jason Ellis, John C. Thomas: Towards Supple Enterprises: Learning from N64 Adrian Chan, Mike Tam: What is social interaction design?

Supple Interfaces Session Two -- Steve Swink “Experience” activity

Supple Interfaces Session Three -- Application domains Yosuke Kinoe, Kristina Höök, Toshiyuki Hama: Relaxed Computing: Supporting Relaxed and Pleasant Experiences in Everyday Life Tom Gross: Social TV as Supple Interface Daniel Schulman, Timothy Bickmore: Comforting Agents

Supple Interfaces Session Four -- evaluation Cristina Conati: Supple Interfaces for Education: can Affective Interactions improve Learning via Educational Games? Alistair Sutcliffe: Designing and Evaluating Engaging (Supple ?)Interfaces

Supple Interfaces Session Five -- demos Katherine Isbister, Rainey Straus, and Jennifer Ash: Wriggle! Creating a platform for dynamic and expressive social-emotional play Kirsten Boehner, Phoebe Sengers, Simeon Warner: Interfaces with the Ineffable: Designing and Evaluating for Sympathetic Awareness Silvia Lindtner: Playful Spaces between Fantasy and Real Chris Creed, Russell Beale: Building Affective Embodied Agents to Assist Long-Term Behavior Change: Design and Evaluation Considerations

Supple Interfaces Session six -- breakout group work Issues: –Whether making supple interfaces is different from the design process for other areas of HCI. Does it require different kinds of engagement with users? New forms of prototyping? Different team composition? –How and when we know that we’ve succeeded. Are evaluation criteria different from other areas of HCI? What sorts of measures are appropriate? What does rigor mean in this type of design? –Grounding in theory. Does this type of practice require us to draw upon different research literature, for example nonverbal notation systems, emotion research, philosophy of experiential design, theories of play, flow, and other experiential qualities? Can we create a shared body of references to help guide new practitioners?
