4 What is this class?  This course “addresses approaches for working with parents, guardians, and the community. Primary content for the on- campus and 30 hours field experience components includes: history of parental and community involvement in schools, interaction/communication skills, types of parental and guardian involvement, diversity of families, emerging trends, and legal implications.”

5 Why do I need this class?  It takes a village to raise a child.  You can’t do it alone!  Resources that are available to assist you and your students needs.  To prepare teacher candidates to analyze, assess and respond to a variety of possible situations encountered in their teaching career regarding students, parents, the community, and globally.

6  To build and expand upon your repertoire of skills and strategies necessary for building partnerships with students, parents, the community, and globally.  To apply knowledge of resources available locally and globally to support students in his/her classroom.

8 Course Expectations  Attendance  2 unexcused absences allowed. Additional absences result in a drop in letter grade.  Participation is expected.  Professionalism

9 Field Experience  30 hours  Crossroads Youth & Family Services  Community After School Program (CASP)  YMCA  Big Brothers, Big Sisters  Other community organizations must be approved through the professor.  Some require longer commitments.
