3 Objectives Today, we will be learning about Greece during the time of Pericles.

4 The Age of Pericles *The Delian League was formed by Athens and others. *League: a group with a common goal. *Promised to defend and protect its members, and regain lost territory.

5 The Age of Pericles Originally at the headquarters was at Delos, but moved to Athens *Athens gain power through the Delian League. Athenian Empire is created.

6 Democracy in Athens Athenian Government *Direct Democracy: every citizen can vote on every government matter *Representative Democracy: citizens elect an official to make laws and decisions on their behalf *Athens used direct democracy

7 Democracy in Athens Athenian Government 43,000 male citizens over 18 yrs old Fewer then 6,000 attended the meetings Meetings every 10 days *Assembly passed all laws, elected officials, and made decisions *Ten officials, generals, carried out the laws and decisions

9 The Achievements of Pericles Athenians reelected their favorite generals *After the Persian Wars, the leading general was Pericles. *Lead Athens for 30 years, 461 – 429 B.C.
