2 Jamaica What kind of place is Jamaica? Why are we talking about Jamaica? Do we have anything in common?

3 Our objectives : To gather all our ideas and knowledge about Jamaica To find out new things about this country To think about the differences between Bethesda and Jamaica To explore what we have in common.

4 Jamaica is a part of the Caribbean Islands

5 It’s a country that stretches over 4,441 sq km Is it bigger than Wales?

6 It has a population of 2.65 million people of African, Afro-European, European, East Indian and Middle Eastern, and Asian descent (background) It is a colourful melting-pot of traditions and cultures!

7 Jamaica has a tropical climate – hot, sunny, balmy and occasionally very rainy! You can see beaches, mountains, valleys, plains and fields. This makes it a perfect country to grow coffee, cocoa and sugar cane

9 What has all this got to do with us? There are so many differences between Wales, Bethesda, and Jamaica. What could we (in Bethesda) have in common?

10 Jamaica has a vivid and painful history Two things have affected the history and character of Jamaica :  The sugar cane industry  The slave trade.

11 Sugar  European sailing ships settling in Jamaica in 18 th century  Wanting to make money  How could they do that? Did they work themselves?
