1 Samurai and Shoguns Take over Japan By Mitchell Rincon, Ryan Butler, and Jake Lyon

2 Previously (Just Listen) We learned about…  Buddhism changed  Common people didn’t have enough time or money to put into the regular Buddhism. In this section, you will learn about…  how the shoguns and samurai take over Japan  society changed within Japan.

3 Fighting Among Japan Red= copy  While Heian was thriving, the rest of Japan was having a hard time  People fought over land  Rebels fought against officials  Destroyed land  New bandits or thieves  Japan’s rulers didn’t notice the problems

4 The Rise of the Samurai Red= copy  Daimyo- Large landowners needed to protect land  Samurai- Trained warriors  hired to defend  Light armor, with swords and bows  Came from noble families  Inherited their position  Required to be loyal to lord

5 Paying the Samurai Red= copy  Army was expensive- only few could buy them weapons and armor  Paid them with food- rice- and land  Lords gave land to only the most powerful samurai  Samurai profited on land even if they didn’t live on it  Hired peasants to work on it if they gave him some of the food or money

6 Shoguns Rule Japan Red= copy  Lots of nobles were unhappy about how the government was being run  strong noble clans wanted the power for themselves  in 1150’s two clans went to war  the Minamoto clan won  Wanted to take over the whole country  didn’t get rid of the emperor  emperor was figurehead- a person who appears to rule even though the real power rests with someone else  1192- became the first Shogun- a general who ruled Japan in the emperors name  passed title down to son- for 700 years shoguns ruled Japan

7 Order of Power Red= copy  The emperor used as a figurehead while the shogun had the real power.  The emperor didn’t rule anything even though it looked like it.  The shogun ruled all of the country.  The Daimyo were the powerful lords that samurais fought for.  Samurai were loyal to the daimyo and the shogun  Japanese were mostly poor peasants though
