6 Geography WATER! Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, Black Sea Water helps with? MOUNTAINS ¾ of land = Mountainous and rugged What kind of govt will they develop? City-states: small, independent communities In Greece: “Polis”

7 Polis/Acropolis  Polis – city-state that has their own govt’s  Made up of a city and its surrounding countryside  The downfall of Greece was a result of feuding city-states  Acropolis  Hilltop where they met to discuss issues

8 Tyranny to Democracy  Tyranny in City States  Democracy v. Oligarchy  Between 750 and 550 BC Greece expands its empire; trade and industry lead to many wealthy people who wanted power and became tyrants  Tyrants fell out of favor. Aristocrats were no longer in power and common people were able to have more of a say in politics. Some city states even used direct democracy

16 Hellenistic Culture  Alexander actively sought to mix the conquered cultures with that of the Greeks  Cultural diffusion  Adopted Persian dress and customs  Married a Persian woman  Included Persians in his army
