3 Crises in the Balkans Ottoman Empire lost power to control Balkan provinces Austria-Hungary/Russia wanted to control the Balkan region By 1878, many were independent Question: Who was in charge of who? Who was free? Bosnian Crisis 1908-Austria-Hungary attempted to annex Bosnia and Herzegovina Serbs upset because they wanted to start their own empire Serbs allied with Russia Germany threatened war, and Russia backed down Serbia a threat to Austria-Hungary’s power
