3 Pre-reading 1. How is Christmas Eve celebrated in western countries? 2. What do you know about Santa Claus? What is his role? Christmas is an important festival in western culture and people celebrate it in their own ways. For example, there will be a Christmas dinner. In the dinner there must be a turkey. Each family has a Christmas tree. They often decorate it to add to the festive atmosphere. All kinds of thing are put on the tree, such as lights, color flowers, toys and stars. Before going to sleep, children prepare an empty socks or shoes for Father Christmas to put gifts in. The next morning, they can find socks and shoes full of such gifts as toys, chocolate and candy. Also known as Father Christmas

6 1.When does the story happen ? It happens on the day before Christmas, that is to say, at Christmas Eve. 2.Who is Ebenezer Scrooge ? Which word is he always using to comment everything ? Maybe Scrooge is a businessman or a boss. He is always commenting things by saying “Humbug”.

7 3.Who is Bob Cratchit ? What does he want to do? Bob is working for Scrooge as a clerk. 4.What does the gentleman want to do? Has he promised? What happened to Scrooge? The gentleman is raising some money to buy the poor some meat, drink and other basic needs. He wants Scrooge to open his heart to the poor. He wants to have a day off on Christmas. But Scrooge doesn’t agree. He would rather let them starve to death than help them. He met Santa Claus in his dream who knows everything about him.
