3 Born in 1949 in St. John, Antigua She left Antigua at seventeen and moved to New York to be an au pair. She went on to study photography at the New York School for Social Research and also attended Franconia College in New Hampshire for a year. Her first writing experience involved a series of articles for Ingenue magazine. In 1973, she changed her name from Cynthia Porter Richardson to Jamaica Kincaid, because her family disapproved of her writing. She published Annie John in 1985.

5 Bildungsroman Annie John represents a classic Bildungsroman or growing up novel, which chronicles the moral, psychological, and intellectual development of a character. Annie John can also be looked as a Caribbean Bildungsroman where the protagonist’s growth toward maturity parallels her society’s progress from colonialism to independence. (Antigua and its British protectorate)

6 Antigua’s history On Nov. 11, 1493, Christopher Columbus saw from a distance, Antigua, and the English came in 1632 and claimed the island under British crown. Then came the discovery of sugar, which became Antigua’s strength. Because of the labor that was need to harvest the sugar, Africans were imported and turned into slaves to do the tough and rough work.

7 Antigua’s history con’t The Antiguans emancipated from slavery on July 31, 1834. Because they were free and were getting paid instead of being taken care of as slaves, the Antiguans were worse off than slaves. They began to fight for independence from the British and Antigua became independent 1981.

8 Connection of Antigua's history to Annie John Annie and Antigua are both viewed as being enslaved. Antigua trying to get freedom and Annie wanting to escape her mother both resemble the struggle to overcome an obstacle. Annie and Antigua both struggle to fight for what they wanted, and they both achieve their goal: Annie by moving to England and Antigua to end slavery.

9 A Major Themes in Annie John Passage – Annie has to go through a type of passage in order to get to her individuality. Annie wants to create her own identity without the influence of her mother or others. She searches for her individuality and independence through rebellious acts.
