Matter Describing Matter

 _________ – anything that has mass & takes up space Matter

Properties of Matter  ___________– study of properties of matter & how matter changes  ____________ – single kind of matter that is pure (one specific composition) Every form of matter has 2 kinds of properties – physical & chemical Chemistry Substance

Physical Properties of Matter  ____________________ – a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing into a different substance Example (Ex): physical state – ice melting (solid  liquid); texture/color – bumpy edge of the table, color of your t-shirt; flexibility – bending a paperclip Physical Property

Chemical Properties of Matter  __________________ – characteristic of a pure substance that CAN CHANGE into a NEW substance Example: flammability – burning wood; ability to react – rusting metal; new substance/properties – baking a cake Chemical Property

Elements

What is an Element?  ___________ – pure substance that CANNOT be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means  Simplest substances Example: Hydrogen (H), Gold (Au), Nitrogen (N), Carbon (C), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Silver (Ag), Oxygen (O) Element

Particles of Elements ______– basic particle from which all elements are made Atom

When Atoms Combine  _______________ – force of attraction between 2 atoms (glues them together)  ___________ – groups of 2+ ATOMS held together by chemical bonds  Example: water (H 2 O); carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) Chemical Bond Molecule

Compounds  ____________ – pure substance made of 2+ ELEMENTS chemically combined in a set ratio  Example: table sugar (H 12 C 22 O 11 ) Compound

Mixtures  __________ – 2+ substances that are together in the same place but not chemically combined  Each substance in a mixture keeps its individual properties  They are not combined in a set ratio Mixture

A.Heterogeneous Mixtures  ______________________– you CAN SEE the different parts Example: trail mix, soil, lucky charms, taco, salad, pizza, spaghetti, chicken noodle soup, beef stew, cheeseburger Heterogeneous Mixture

A. Homogeneous Mixtures  ______________________– so evenly mixed you CANNOT SEE the different parts  Example: pancake batter, salt water, sugar cookies, vanilla ice cream, bread  _________– a homogeneous mixture that forms when substance dissolve  Example: koolaid, salt water, hot cocoa Homogeneous Mixture Solution
