3 W IND OF C HANGE WITH M ARGUERITE B ARANKITSE 3 The first steps to autonomy and development Creation of Hotels services in 1999 to employ uneducated youngsters without families: 30 young people employed Training centers since 2004 for youngsters who can’t follow formal education: 2.346 young people trained in mecanics, plumbing, dressmaking, capentry, etc. A hospital center since 2008 (Rema Hospital, Medical School and Maternal and Child protection center) to provide health care to poor families of the East region of Burundi: 103.000 patients treated, and 75 nurses graduated

4 W IND OF C HANGE WITH M ARGUERITE B ARANKITSE MAISON SHALOM TEAM, NEARLY 300 STAFF 4 21 years later… a model of community-based development A union of agricultural cooperatives to improve the nutrition and revenue of the families: 9.000 households. ITEKA Microfinance to fund the revenues generating activities of the farmers’ and small traders’ households: 8.397 households involved A Hospital Center to maintain the health of the families and enable them to work towards they autonomy An excellence school (kindergarden and primary school for now) to provide quality education from early age
