2 The United Nations (UN) The United Nations was created on October 24, 1945. 51 countries made up the original United Nations. Today, there are 191 nations participating in the organization.

3 4 Goals of the United Nations 1.To keep peace throughout the world 2.To develop friendly relations among nations 3.To work together to help poor people live better lives, conquer hunger, disease, illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms 4.To be a center for helping nations achieve these goals

4 UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) Provides humanitarian relief to children around the world in need such as: – Health care & immunizations – Nutrition & food security – Education – Emergency relief – And more…… Main goal is to provide all children with a safe & healthy childhood

5 World Health Organization (WHO) The World Health Organization was created on April 7, 1948. It is the part of the United Nations that focuses on global health concerns.

6 Goals of WHO To serve as a leader in global health concerns To establish research to improve public health To set health standards To provide health care support to nations To monitor and assess health trends such as the outbreak of infectious diseases To combat disease and promote the general health of people around the world

7 World Bank The World Bank is a source of financial support to developing countries. It provides loans to serve purposes such as investing in education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, and other economic developments. It also supports the creation of business.

8 2 Types of Purposes of the World Bank Works to reduce poverty and improve development in middle income nations by providing stable loans. Works with the poorest countries by providing interest-free loans to improve living conditions and to improve economic growth.

9 International Monetary Fund (IMF) In response to the Great Depression, the International Monetary Fund was created to help secure financial stability.

10 Goals of the IMF To promote (encourage) international monetary (financial) cooperation To secure financial stability To facilitate (help) international trade To promote high employment To sustain (keep steady) economic growth To reduce (lower) poverty

11 African Union (AU) The African Union was created in 2001 to address social, economic, and political problems occurring within the continent. It also intends to promote Africa’s position in the global economy.

12 Goals of the AU To achieve unity between the people and countries of Africa To promote peace, security, and stability in the continent of Africa To protect human rights in Africa To promote economic stability in Africa To advance the development of the continent through research and technology To work with international partners
