Welcome to Science 12/2 1. Science News 2. Ch. 12 Section 4 on Erosion 3. Question of the Day 4. Skills Lab

Question of the Day In a freak occurrence of natural disasters a landslide, volcanic eruption, tsunami, and earthquake all happened in the same area. It seems that each disaster was caused by another disaster. What is the most likely order that these events occurred? An Earthquake strikes triggering the volcanic eruption. The eruption causes the landslide and the landslide causes the tsunami.

Ch. 12 Section 4 Erosion by Gravity How does gravity move sediments? Gravity pulls sediments down hills, slopes, cliffs, and mountains. landslide video We call this MASS MOVEMENT

What do landslides, mudslides, and avalanches all have in common? They move material (rocks, soil, snow, mud) down hill by the force of ________________

What impacts do landslides, mudslides, and avalanches have on humans? Destroy buildings, roads, bridges, and cause injuries and death. 1,000s are killed each year 100s of millions of $ are lost each year

What is the most valuable info. that we can gain from studying mass movements? How far the movement will go. How fast the movement will happen. What causes the movement?

Sand Hills Lab In this lab you will develop and test a hypothesis about how mass movement affects the size and shape of a sand hill. You will be creating landslides and making observations about your landslides. Problem: What is the relationship between height and width of a sand hill? Materials: dry sand, ruler, cardboard tube, tape, pencil, skewer, large sheet of paper, spoon Follow the Procedure Exactly!!!

Sand Hills Lab Data Table Test12345 Width (cm) Height (cm) Follow the book’s directions for measuring the height and width of the sand hills. Blue box on p. 70

Sand Hills Lab

How do the following terms relate to the lab? Erosion Sediment Deposition Gravity Mass movement
