Guided Notes For Chapter 8 – 1 Changing Earth’s Surface Wearing Down and Building Up What processes wear down and build up Earth’s surface?

Erosion – The process by which natural forces move weathered rock from one place to another.

Sediment is the material moved by erosion. Weathering and erosion produce sediment..

Deposition – The area where sediment is laid or deposited. Deposition changes the shape of land.

Weathering, Erosion & Deposition act together to wear down and build up Earth’s surface.

Mass Movement – Gravity is the force pulling rocks and other materials downhill. Four types of Mass Movement: LANDSLIDES MUDSLIDES SLUMP CREEP

Landslide – (The most destructive) When rock and soil move quickly down a steep slope. El Salvador, 2001

Landslide

A Mudflow is the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water (60%), rock and soil.

Slump refers to the sudden movement of one large mass of rock and soil.

Creep is the very slow downhill movement of rock and soil.
