Functions of the Integumentary System: Protects internal organs/systems Protects against infectious organisms Prevents loss of body fluids Regulates body temperature Removes wastes – perspiration Generates Vitamin D – Sunlight Protects against sunburns Stores fat for fuel and insulation Sensory organ w/ receptors for touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold

Parts of the Integumentary System 1.SKIN 2.HAIR 3.NAILS ***All form from dead cells which the body sheds as new cells push up from underneath.

skin 1. Epidermis : Outside Layer Produces Melanin--- Gives skin its color and protects us from UV rays. Made up of keratin (protein) 2. Dermis: Contains nerve endings, blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands. 3. Subcutaneous : Made of fat and keeps us warm. Holds skin to tissues Hair starts here.

Nails Protects fingers and toes Formed from keratin(protein) and are tough and plate- like No nerve endings Grow 1/10 of an inch per month

Hair Each hair grows out of a follicle Hairs are large columns of dead cells which are filled with protein called keratin Hair color is determined by amount of melanin in skin 100,000 follicles on your head
