2 Biography  Lived Oct. 1890 – March 1969  Enrolled in the US military academy in 1911  5 Star general in the U.S Army  Supreme commander during WWII in Europe  During WWII he was responsible for supervising the invasion of France and Germany  1 st Supreme commander of NATO  34 th President of the United States  President from 1953-1961

3 Interstate Highway System  Initial planning began in 1921  Created in 1956  Started when the president signed the Federal-aid Highway Act  Largest public works project in history  Gave citizens a way out and military a way into large cities in the event of a war  It was considered the building block for economic growth  Eisenhower knew it was important to create because of the hassle of sending U.S army vehicles coast to coast.  One of the most important accomplishments during his presidency  Today- 46,876 miles long

4 Eisenhower Doctrine  Used armed force to protect foreign countries from Communism  It was made in response to the possibility of a generalized war which was threatened when the Soviets tried to enter in Egypt  In July 1958, the US sent 15,000 soldiers to Lebanon to protect them  The doctrines main goal was to protect the Middle East from Communism because it held a lot of oil that was key to our economy and if they would have given in to communism, then we would have lost a lot of oil.

5 Civil Rights Acts 1957-1960  Much of racial disadvantages were demolished in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the acts of 1957 & 1960 helped to open the door  Gave African Americans the right to vote  Required federal inspection of voting polls to make sure no one was threatening African Americans to vote for a certain candidate  “I believe that the United States must make certain that every citizen who is entitled to vote under the Constitution is given actually that right. I believe also that in sustaining that right we must sustain the power of the Federal judges in whose hands such cases would fall” -quote by President Dwight D. Eisenhower

6 The creation of NASA -National Aeronautics and Space Administration -Established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act -It was the beginning of the Space Race -Made as a response to the Soviets first satellite (Sputnik I). - U.S felt behind in technology after Sputnik -Sputnik put fear in US citizens and called for immediate action from the president - NASA was finally created in 1958 -Sent satellites into orbit to spy on the Soviets. -Gave work to 8,000 people -Project Mercury= The goal of the project was to discover if man could stay alive in space. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K8_bOL0tdM
