2  In her “Voice of the People” essay, Abbey Perkins describes a bus ride in the city of Chicago that makes her uncomfortable.  In your own words, write down what you think Perkins’s purpose was in writing her essay.

4 Multiple ChoiceThe Essay Questions 60 Minutes@50-58 questions 2 hours, 15 minutes (15 minutes reading time) 5 to 6 passages Give yourself around 40 minutes for each essay. Passages range from the 16 th Century to the present. 1.The Synthesis Question At least one passage will contain questions relating to documentation of sources. 2.The Argument Question The multiple choice section counts for 45% of the total grade for the exam. 3.The Rhetorical Strategies Question The essay section counts for 55% of the total grade for the exam.

5  While students will not be required to have memorized any particular styles (for example, MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.), they will be responsible for gleaning information from citations that may follow any one of these (or other) styles.  At least one of the passages in the multiple choice section will be from a published work (book, journal, periodical, etc.) that includes footnotes or a bibliography; the documentation questions will be based on these passages.

6  How to process an argument?  Write down what you need to do anytime you read a nonfiction text.

7  Rhetorical Triangle: SPEAKER, AUDIENCE, SPEAKER  The Situation: CONTEXT and PURPOSE  Rhetorical Appeals: ETHOS, PATHOS, LOGOS  Search for rhetorical devices.

8  Contemporary life is marked by controversy. Choose a controversial local, national, or global issue with which you are familiar. Then, using appropriate evidence, write an essay that carefully considers the opposing positions on this controversy and proposes a solution or compromise.

9  Then write an essay analyzing the rhetorical strategies each writer uses to achieve his purpose and explaining which letter offers the more persuasive case.  Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how the rhetorical strategies that Chesterfield uses reveal his own values.

10 The passage below is a letter written by Chicago resident Abbey Perkins and is taken from the “Voice to the People” section of the Chicago Sun- Times. In the piece, Perkins describes her experience with the rash of gun violence that occurred in Chicago in 2012 and 2013. Read the passage carefully. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze how the rhetorical strategies that Perkins uses reveal her purpose as well as her response to the gun violence.
