3 History of the CR program Dates back to 1920 32 past presidents of ARS, hybridizers, nurserymen, and other noted rosarians were designated “Consulting Rosarians” In 1949 ARS let districts appoint CR’s In 1996 the school system as we know it, run by the districts, was established

4 What is a Consulting Rosarian? An individual qualified to give advice on rose culture One who is expected to inspire love and appreciation of roses Takes an active role in the ARS, its districts and in local societies Knowledgeable in all aspects of rose culture and willingly shares this knowledge

5 Consulting Rosarian Code “I, __________, accept the honor of the official appointment as Consulting Rosarian of the American Rose Society for the __________ District. I pledge my earnest efforts toward the increase and stimulation of membership in the American Rose Society, in cooperation with the District Director. I shall uphold the highest standards of our American Rose Society in inspiring a love and appreciation of roses, their culture and exhibition. The aims and purposes of the American Rose Society shall be foremost in my mind in promoting and forming new rose societies, securing new members and serving present members and anyone interested in roses. I recognize and accept the responsibilities of this post, as well as the privilege of service.”

6 Things a CR should do: Volunteer to help whenever possible Be willing to serve the local society as an officer Give special attention to new members regarding rose culture Grow some roses - a few of each type Promote membership in the local society and the ARS

7 A few more things a CR should do Stay current with what’s new in rose culture, equipment, chemicals, laws and regulations, etc. Never recommend a restricted chemical Offer friendly, simple advice Never charge a fee for advice!

8 Helping New Rose Growers Visit their garden, make helpful suggestions, never criticize Offer to SHARE willingly, don’t wait to be asked. The object is to HELP! Don’t overwhelm them with so much info they get discouraged! KISS – Keep It Super Simple!

9 To Remain an Active CR Must be an active member of the ARS, and a member of a local rose society Keep abreast of new varieties, new chemicals, problems and solutions common in your area Every 4 years, attend a CR school or accrue 4 approved continuing education credits during that period

10 To Remain an Active CR (cont.) Submit an annual report (if required by district) Filing a Roses in Review (RIR) report yearly is expected of all CR’s Stay enthused; share your knowledge, be involved, help others, promote the ARS and the love of the rose!
