Chapter 8: Cellular Energetics Feb. 21, 2005 Holly Gasal

ATP  ATP is a universal energy currency found in all types of organisms.  Glycolysis, cellular respiration and photosynthesis are the 3 main sources of ATP.

Glycolysis  The initial step of glucose metabolism occurs in the cytosol of the cell.  Glucose is converted to pyruvate by 10 water soluble enzymes.

Fermentation - Anaerobic metabolism

Cellular Respiration

Electron Transport chain

ATP synthesis using proton motive force  F 1 (ATPase) portion of the complex is responsible for ATP production  F 0 portion acts as a proton channel.

Conclusion  ATP is the universal energy of all organisms.  Glycolysis – the initial step in glucose metabolism – yields 2 ATP, 2 NADH, and 2 pyruvate molecules.  Fermentation is the further metabolism of pyruvate in the absence of oxygen.  Cellular respiration consists of the further metabolism of glucose in the presence of oxygen through the citric acid cycle.  The electron transport chain produces a proton gradient which drives the production of ATP by the F 0 F 1 complex.
