3 THE FEUDAL SYSTEM The feudal system during the middle ages was a way of life. The feudal system ranked people. The king was the highest ranked. The king owned all the land, and everyone worked for him. The nobles, barons, and bishops were next. They had to provide the king with a number of knights, money, advice, and a place to stay when traveling. The country was divided into many knights fees. The lord was after the nobles. They all had a manor, but they each had to supply the king with a knight. Villeins were next. They received land for working for the lord, but couldn’t sell it. The serfs and peasants were on the bottom. They had no land even though they worked for the lords Serfs Nobles Lord King

4 CRAFTSMEN AND SERFS Serfs were mostly farmers and housewives, much like the villeins, but they weren’t free. They had certain rights, particularly to the land they could tend for themselves, but they and their children were considered the lord’s property. They spent as much as half their time tending his crops and doing other kinds of service. Craftsmen of certain kinds worked in the villages and castles of the lord, rather than in the town. A village needed a farrier, for instance to put iron shoes on the lords’ horses, make and repair farm tools, mend pots and do other metal work.

5 Kings and Queens Kings and queens ruled the Middle Ages. Kings and queens have a lot of things even a jester who entertains them 24 /7. The king ruled most countries in Europe during the Middle Ages. The queen influenced the politics of the Middle Ages. Ruling the Middle Ages was hard, but it was worth it.
