#1: “In the absence of Lord Furnivel he was in charge of the manor, the laws and the peasants.”  This sentence from the novel said that the lord had control over the manor, the laws and the peasants. In the middle ages, there were lords who owned a small part of the kings land. The lord had control over everything on the piece of land. That includes the serfs (peasants) who are bound to the land. He also controls the laws for that piece of land. #2: “There was no coffin”  The sentence above is basically saying that they could not afford a coffin to lay the body down in. Another name for the middle ages are the “Dark Ages”. Historians call it this because the middle ages was a dark time period full of war, death and blood. Most people could not afford a coffin or even a proper burial.

#3: “We laid her down with her feet toward to east so when the Day of Judgment came she would- may God grant it- rise up to face Jerusalem.”  The sentence above says that if God shall grant it then she shall rise up to face Jerusalem. The Crusades were a series of religious wars between the Muslims and the Christians. The Muslim city, Jerusalem, marked where the Holy Land was. The Christians were trying to claim the Holy Land as their own. #4: “But how can I leave? I’m bound to the land. They’ll never give me permission to go.”  The sentence above says that whoever is talking is tied to the land and cannot leave it. In the middle ages they had a type of system they called feudalism. The peasants in this system were called serfs. They farmed and cared for the land that they could not leave. They could not leave that land because they were owned by the feudal lords.

#5: “The old crone’s cottage, like most other Stromford dwellings, was built with a few timbers.”  The sentence above basically says that everyone in the village have weak homes. Most of the people in the middle ages could not afford house made out of stone or concrete. Most of the houses were made out of straw or wooden planks. #6: “At length I flung myself upon my knees and prayed long and hard to Our Savior Jesus, to His Sainted Mother Mary and most of all to my blessed Saint Giles for mercy, guidance, comfort and protection.”  This sentence tells of someone praying to their God. The middle ages was a dark and gloomy time that was filled with death. The only hope people had left was from their God. Religion was a big part of this time period because it gave people hope for an after life, better life.

#7: “ He wore a wide-sleeved tunic of black, and ankle-length hose with a different color for each leg, one blue, the other red, though the colors were faded. His brown leather boots were long and somewhat pointy at the tips.”  The sentence above is describing a jester. A jester was a person who traveled from town to town, spreading joy and happiness. The jester usually plays music and dances, sings and juggles. #8: “ One man, a stride a great horse was, he said, a tax collector.”  The sentence talks about a tax collector. In the middle ages the feudal lords collect taxes from the serfs to give to the king in exchange for land. Whoever the lord appointed to collect taxes from each town, had some power, but not as much as the lord himself.

#9: “ It now belongs to his widow, the Lady Furnival. Unless some bastard son-with an army at his back- makes a claim. Or until she marries.”  When a man of power (lord, king) dies then his land and money goes to his heir or his wife. The widow claims the land but once she marries again or someone else takes over, the land is handed over to the man. #10: “ It was the place where privies were set over open ditches.”  In the back of the book (page 310) there is a glossary that says the definition of ‘privies’. The word ‘Privy’ is an outdoor toilet. The sentence above proves that this time period is a poor one because of the facility's.
