Mary and the Fragrant Oil

Lord Jesus Christ  Lord Jesus Christ was a close friend of Lazarus and his siters Martha, and Mary.  He used to like their home and found comfort and rest in it  Many times He went and visited them. Spending long hours with them.  Lord Jesus Christ was a close friend of Lazarus and his siters Martha, and Mary.  He used to like their home and found comfort and rest in it  Many times He went and visited them. Spending long hours with them.

 He loved them all and made a great miracle when he brought Lazarus back from the dead after 4 days of being dead.

Story Cont’d  After this great miracle, Lord Jesus went to visit Lazarus, Martha and Mary again. There house was full of people.  They all came to see Lord Jesus and Lazarus after he was raised from the dead.  They made Him a big supper that Martha had prepared.  After this great miracle, Lord Jesus went to visit Lazarus, Martha and Mary again. There house was full of people.  They all came to see Lord Jesus and Lazarus after he was raised from the dead.  They made Him a big supper that Martha had prepared.

 Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Lord Jesus, and wiped up His feet with her hair.

 The house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.  Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would end up betraying Him, said: “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?”  This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; taking stuff that was put into it.

 But Lord Jesus said, “Leave her alone; she has kept this for the day of my burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always” (John 12:3-8)  Lord Jesus did not mean that we do not take care of the poor or that He did not care for them, but he meant that we should not forget God as we care for the poor.

Few things to Consider…  Mary had great love for Lord Jesus Christ.  She wanted to show her love so she poured expensive oil on His feet.  So she sacrificed lots of money and did an action to show her love.  This is the real love which is expressed by actions not just by words  Mary had great love for Lord Jesus Christ.  She wanted to show her love so she poured expensive oil on His feet.  So she sacrificed lots of money and did an action to show her love.  This is the real love which is expressed by actions not just by words

More things to Consider  Many of us say we love Lord Jesus but we do nothing to show our love  Sometimes we even do not want to spend time talking to Him in prayer  So how can we love God when we do not want to talk to him or listen to him in the Holy Bible talking to us….!!!!!  How can we love God when we are doing nothing to show our love to Him?  Many of us say we love Lord Jesus but we do nothing to show our love  Sometimes we even do not want to spend time talking to Him in prayer  So how can we love God when we do not want to talk to him or listen to him in the Holy Bible talking to us….!!!!!  How can we love God when we are doing nothing to show our love to Him?

What are things we can do to show our love to God?

Examples of Love:  Obedience to His word and the Holy Bible  Pray and talk to Him regularly  Show love and kindness to others  Take care of the poor and the sick  Do things that God had asked us to do and would make Him happy when we do it  Obedience to His word and the Holy Bible  Pray and talk to Him regularly  Show love and kindness to others  Take care of the poor and the sick  Do things that God had asked us to do and would make Him happy when we do it

Conclusion  Mary showed her love by sacrificing the expensive good smelling oil to wash the feet of Lord Jesus Christ and wipe them with her hair  Lord Jesus appreciated her action and commended her for doing it  Similarly when we show our love to the Lord through good deeds He will commend us and reward us in heaven when we get to meet Him.  Mary showed her love by sacrificing the expensive good smelling oil to wash the feet of Lord Jesus Christ and wipe them with her hair  Lord Jesus appreciated her action and commended her for doing it  Similarly when we show our love to the Lord through good deeds He will commend us and reward us in heaven when we get to meet Him.

Memory Verse  “And the house was filled with fragrance of the oil” (John 12:3)  “And the house was filled with fragrance of the oil” (John 12:3)
