1 Board Work (in notes) What is cell differentiation?
The process of a cell becoming specialized or different. Describe how a heart cell looks different from a blood cell Heart cells are smooth, thin and long, blood cells are round.

2 Board Work (in notes) What function does the nucleus perform in a cell? Large central body, cell’s main control center, contains DNA What function does the cytoplasm perform in a cell? Fluid inside the cell that cushions organelles

3 How Living Things Are Organized
Objective—we will continue our study of human anatomy by studying how the tissues of the body vary based on their function.

4 Plan for Today Notes on tissues Brainpop
Perhaps some science fair presentations

5 TISSUE NOTES A group of cells working together forms a tissue.
The materials around and between the cells is also part of the tissue.

6 The body contains five main types of tissue.
Epithelial tissue Blood tissue Connective tissue Nervous tissue Muscle tissue

7 Organs in animals are composed of a number of different tissue types
Organs in animals are composed of a number of different tissue types. For example, the stomach:

8 Epithelial tissue Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces and lines body cavities. Functions include lining, protecting, and forming glands.

9 Blood tissue Blood is a connective tissue of cells separated by a liquid (plasma) matrix.

10 Connective tissue Cartilage Adipose (fat)
Connective tissue serves many purposes in the body: binding supporting protecting forming blood storing fats filling space Cartilage Adipose (fat)

11 Nervous tissue Nervous tissue functions in the integration of stimulus and control of response to that stimulus. Nerve cells are called neurons.

12 Muscle tissue Cardiac (heart) Skeletal
Muscle tissue allows movement of the animal by contraction of individual muscle cells (referred to as muscle fibers). Cardiac (heart) Skeletal
