A Changing Society Urbanization, Immigration, Europeans, and the Aboriginals By: Shayna Kelders

When the Europeans came to Canada, they changed the Aboriginals lives with their new technology, ideas, culture, food, surroundings and weapons. Some were for the best, but some were for the worst

Comparing the Aboriginals with the Europeans When the Aboriginals killed animals, they only killed what they needed to survive, (exp. hide- bedding, meat- food, bones- weapons. Aboriginals hand-planted their crops, even though it was a long and hard process, it wasn’t harming the earth The Aboriginals lived in small teepees, because it was all the space they needed The Europeans killed everything leaving nothing for the Aboriginals Europeans used tractors, combines, cars and trucks, which polluted the air The Europeans lived in huge houses, taking up more space

Urbanization and the environment Urbanization is the growing of an urban city. The growing of these cities caused a problem for the environment. Once the technology caught up, more factories were being made, causing pollution. Once all of the immigrants came and took all the room, they had no room to throw the garbage. So the people eventually started throwing their garbage in the lakes and rivers.

Immigration and the Environment Immigration is the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanently staying. When the immigrants came over, they had to look for food. Since there were so many immigrants coming over, they over hunted, leaving no food for the others. When the population increased, and there were no more jobs, technology finally caught up. Even though the technology made it a lot easier to get things done and provided more jobs it caused pollution to the earth.

Waste At the Turn of the Century In the early 1900’s people threw their garbage and sewage into the lakes and rivers Urbanization and immigration caused dense cities and the increase of garbage and waste shows that they did positive things to conserve water Eventually they got boards of health that did not allow people to contaminate the water with the garbage and sewage these laws are similar to today’s that help protect the environment

Adopting the Aboriginals Way If we would have adopted the Aboriginals culture our world today would be nothing like we know it. Our technology would be nothing. We would be hunting our food with spears, our houses would be made out of wood and moss, we wouldn’t have cars, trucks, buses, airplanes, our houses would be warmed with a fire. Our knowledge would be limited with our transportation so simple. Our environment would be very clean, with no worries about pollution and global warming. Look at our world now, scientists are saying that the world is going to end in 2012. Obviously the Aboriginals were better stewards of the earth.

Then & Now Many of the Aboriginals live very much similar to the way they lived many years ago. They still are the best stewards of the earth, even with all the technology surrounding them.

Immigration to Canada Between 1897 and 1905 most of the immigrants originated from Britain. Some of the reasons could be: poor landscape not making enough money poverty opening railways in Canada gold rush in Canada cheaper land in Canada more job opportunities in Canada

The technology and tools that changed the world: Telephones Bicycles Cars and trucks Airplane Television Farm machinery Medical tools Farming tools Working Tools Cooking Tools

Money & Work Between the 1870’s and 1900’s work was sometimes hard to find. Some people worked two different jobs because their pay was way too low. Some people were paid less then 1 dollar a week. They had no breaks except for lunch, but even that wasn’t paid either.
