3 Compulsive Eating/Binge Eating  Binge-eating disorder is a serious eating disorder in which you frequently consume unusually large amounts of food.  A compulsive eater will usually do this to overcome feelings of sadness, anger, stress, etc.

4 Compulsive Eating/Binge Eating – RISK FACTORS  Family History  Dieting  Psychological Issues  - Depression - Substance abuse - Trouble coping with stress, anger, sadness, boredom and worry.

5 Compulsive Eating/Binge Eating – SIGNS & SYMPTOMS  Eating large amounts of food  Eating even when not hungry or full  Eating rapidly during binge episodes  Depression  Anxiety  Frequent dieting, possibly without weight loss  Frequently eating alone (“closet eating”)

8 What is Anorexia?  Starvation  Low caloric intake (500-800 per day) (500-800 per day)  False body image

9 Anorexia & Bulimia – RISK FACTORS  Female (although males are at risk as well)  Weight Changes (comments from others)  Transitions (moving, break-up, parent divorce, death in family, etc.)  Sports, Work, Artistic Activities (gymnasts, dancers, models)  Media and Society

10 Anorexia – SIGNS & SYMPTOMS  Fear of gaining weight  Skip meals (excuses)  Won’t eat in front of others  Baggy clothes  Excessive exercise  Excessive weight loss  Denies having a problem  Low body temperature (fine hair growth)

11 Anorexia – HEALTH RISKS  Death  Anemia  Heart problems/Heart Failure  Bone loss  In females - absence of a period  In males - decreased testosterone  Electrolyte abnormalities, such as low blood potassium, sodium and chloride  Kidney problems * When the body no longer has fat to burn it turns to muscle. When it no longer has muscle to burn, the body starts attacking its organs – heart, liver, kidneys.

12 What is Bulimia?  Binging followed by purging (getting rid of food by vomiting, laxative use, and/or over exercise)

13 Bulimia – SIGNS & SYMTPOMS  Constant worry about weight  Excessive food consumption  Trips to bathroom after eating  Sore throat  Dental issues  Irregular periods  Excessive exercise (“non-purging bulimia”)  Blood shot eyes  Cuts on fingers

14 Bulimia – HEALTH RISKS  Heart problems, such as an irregular heartbeat and heart failure  Severe tooth decay  In females, absence of a period  Digestive problems  Death
