2 I The Depression Devastates Peoples’ Lives A. The Depression in the Cities Ppl in large cities loose their homes Live in street & shantytowns on outskirts of city Shantytowns= small towns consisting of shacks made up of scrap materials Soup kitchens & Bread Lines open up in cities to feed homeless

3 B. The Impact of Af. Amer. & Latino Americans Unemploy. Rate for both groups higher than other Amer. Depression brought rise in racial violence due to job competition Lynching and calls for deportations rose

4 C. Depression in Rural Areas & Dust Bowl GD in Rural area had 1 advantage: most farmers could grow enough food to feed fam Many lost land because of debt  turned to tenant farming Drought in 1930s caused Dust Bowl Dust Bowl= exhausted land due to overproduction of crops together w/ drought caused dirt to be picked up by winds because no plant roots to hold down soil Ppl known as Okie traveled west to Cali Okie= orig. known for Oklahomans came to be used negatively for all the migrants

5 Effects on the American Family During hard times Americans trad. Family values & fam unity increased However, strain was put on families and even broke some apart

6 A. Men in the Streets and on the Rails Men accustomed to working and providing became desperate after yrs. Of unemployment During early GD there was no for of direct relief Direct relief= cash payments or food provided by the gov’t to the poor

7 B. Women and Children Struggle to Survive Women worked to help fam by canning food & sewing old clothes Women work outside home  resentment of working women Belief was that no woman should have a job if a man cant find one Children suffered health prob due to poor diet & lack of health care Children working in sweat shops

8 C. Social & Psychological Effects Suicide rates rise Adults stop going to doctor& young ppl give up dream of college Stigma of poverty & penny pinching disappeared Families help other families giving them food or place to stay Habit needed to survive during this time shaped a whole generation & would stay w/ them their entire lives
