14 CH11.L3: Turkish Empires Rise in Anatolia Interaction between Abbasids & Turks: –Abbasids bought Turkish children to become slaves, military soldiers, & bodyguards. The Persians were in power (945 A.D.) of the Abbasids at this time. –Eventually, Turkish mamelukes, grew powerful enough to take over the Abbasid Empire. Mamelukes were military slaves.

16 Seljuk Turks Take Over Abbasid (Muslim) Empire – 1055 A.D. Embraced what culture? –Persian culture Political & religious roles: –Sultan governed as political leader Vizier was prime minister to sultan. –Caliph was religious leader

17 Malik Shah Last, capable Seljuk leader Accomplishments? –Embraced Persian culture (art & education) because they lacked their own. –Beautified Isfahan with mosques (see previous slide).

19 Conclusion: How did Seljuks build their empire, & what led to its downfall? How it was built: –Through war –Strengthened by embracing the Persians, & adopting their culture & religion Reasons for decline: –No capable sultan after Malik Shah, so the empire divided into mini-kingdoms. –Some of those kingdoms fell to the Mongols.
