1 Do now! Can you stick the summary and word sheets in?
Don’t forget we have a test on Friday (topics 9e and 9f)

2 Last lesson Extraction of metals from their ores related to the reactivity series

3 Ores Most metals are found naturally in rocks called ores. They are in compounds, chemically bonded to other elements iron ore

4 Native Some unreactive metals can be found as elements. They are called native metals.

5 Roasting Some unreactive metals can be extracted from a compound simply by heating. This is called roasting.

6 More reactive metals? Zinc, iron, tin, lead

7 Extracting metals with carbon
Carbon is higher than some metals in the reactivity series. It can be used to extract medium reactive metals.

8 Extracting metals with carbon
lead oxide + carbon lead + carbon dioxide 2PbO(s) + C(s) 2Pb(s) + CO2(g)

9 Extracting metals with carbon
lead oxide + carbon lead + carbon dioxide 2PbO(s) + C(s) 2Pb(s) + CO2(g) carbon is oxidised lead oxide is reduced

10 The Blast furnace YouTube - Steelmaking: Blast Furnace Molten iron
Iron ore (haematite), coke (carbon) and limestone (calcium carbonate) Hot waste gases (recycled to heat furnace) 1000°C YouTube - Steelmaking: Blast Furnace 1500°C 1900°C Blasts of hot air Blasts of hot air Molten iron

11 More reactive metals?

12 Electrolysis of aluminium oxide
CO2

13 Let’s extract a metal!

14 Carbon + copper oxide copper + carbon dioxide

15 Today’s lesson Uses of metals

16 Gold Unreactive, malleable and a good conductor of electricity

17 Gold Unreactive, malleable and a good conductor of electricity
Jewelry, wires in computers, gold leaf

18 Aluminium Light, and a very unreactive oxide layer forms over the reactive metal means it does not corrode

19 Aluminium Light, and a very unreactive oxide layer forms over the reactive metal means it does not corrode Aircraft, cars, cutlery etc.

20 Steel (mainly iron) Strong, fairly cheap.

21 Steel (mainly iron) Strong, fairly cheap. Building

22 Copper Ductile, unreactive and a good conductor

23 Copper Ductile, unreactive and a good conductor Saucepans, wires etc.

24 Let’s go for a walk! Looking for uses of metals

25 Reading?! Pages 84 and 85
