USING INDESIGN AS A TOOL FOR DESIGN AND ADVERTISEMENT CREATION ANDY ALVAREZ 10-15-15 EDTC 3332 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY PRACTICUM

NEEDS ASSESSMENT: The news paper and more specifically the designers and paginators are tasked with creating multiple advertisements all within a strict deadline. With the lack of available staff designers there is often times where they are swamped with work and forced through the creative process. Indesign is the product standard for creating print design mainly for its more advanced features in optimization and its pairing with the other adobe suites.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT: The problem is that the they are forced to create these advertisements and unnecessary time is spent on setting up the dimensions and specifications of the advertisements (e.g., sizes, color mode, bleed and slug, margins, and resolution) before even starting on the design creation. The program being used is out of date as compared to Adobe Indesign. As of right now the software being used is obsolete due to its lack of advanced features and tools. The compatibility of the current program is not consistent with the other programs in use (Photoshop and Illustrator) The program I will introduce (Adobe Indesign) is under the same Adobe software, which is directly relevant and can work off of each other. Thus creating a more efficient work flow.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: I want the learners to be able to confidently use Adobe Indesign for the creation of every day advertisement designs, while utilizing the program’s many features and advanced tools and options. The creation of templates for more optimized work flow is also what I hope my learners grasp.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: OBJECTIVE 1: Using Indesign(CN), the learners will create, setup and save a new document template (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR) OBJECTIVE 2: Using Indesign (CN), the learners will navigate through the tools and functions menus (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR) OBJECTIVE 3: Using Indesign (CN), the learners will set up proportionate text columns (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR)

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1.Using Indesign(CN), the learners will create, setup and save a new document template (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR) 2. Using Indesign (CN), the learners will navigate through the tools and functions menus (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR) 3. Using Indesign (CN), the learners will set up proportionate text columns (B), with no assistance and 100% accuracy. (CR) Check for understanding while teaching: Learners will open program and follow along with steps provided in creating new document template. Evaluate the learner’s mastery of the concept by providing a quiz at the end of the training. 1.Where to select and save template? 2.What drop down button opens the advanced settings? Performance ObjectiveInteractive Activities & Assessment Check for understanding while teaching: Create a ‘key’ or guide of the tools and menus for the learners to follow along with the training. Evaluate the learner’s mastery of the concept by providing a quiz at the end of the training. 3. What tools are used for a majority of the design aspects? 4. Where can you access tools that are not on the screen panel. Check for understanding while teaching: Learners will set up several different number of text columns and save them to different pages Evaluate the learner’s mastery of the concept by providing a quiz at the end of the training. 5. Where in the menu or tool pallet can you access the column options? 6. How can you modify an existing column?

LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS: My target audience will be: Designers and Paginators within the production department Both male and female Ages vary from 29-50 English Speakers Learners must have advanced computer and graphic design skills and knowledge.

LEARNING CONTEXT: Instruction training will be in the workplace preferably at their own desks. Access to computers and the Adobe Indesign software is required which is already available. Constraints: Due to the unpredictability of the daily workload, the training will require a slow day to complete. The training will allow for the learners to go at their own discretion, while at the same time not hindering their responsibilities and duties as graphic designers and paginators.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: Introduction: The learners will practice the skills needed to phase into the Indesign program in order to create a more efficient overall product for our clients. Hook: After completing this tutorial the learners will know how to use Indesign and all of its many beneficial tools, shortcuts and optimizing factors. Learners will be able to: Template & Document creation (a) How to open new document (b) How to set up templates and save (c) Students will follow along with training and create new document templates

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: Tools & Menus (a) Tool functions and options/features (b) Accessing tools not on the screen palate (c) Review tool “key” and menu locations Text Columns and Formatting (a) How to access paragraph column and functions (b) How to change options for existing columns (c) Students will follow along with instruction and create a different number of columns in different pages

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY: Final Assessment using a Survey Monkey link. A quiz with the following questions will be given to test the knowledge learned in online tutorial 1. Where to select and save template? 2. What drop down button opens the advanced settings? 3. What tools are used for a majority of the design aspects? 4. Where can you access tools that are not on the screen panel. 5. Where in the menu or tool pallet can you access the column options? 6. How can you modify an existing column?

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES: In order to complete the training all learners will need: Computer access Internet access Adobe Indesign program Survey monkey link for the final assesment

TRAINING MODULE BLUEPRINT: Open Indesign Introduce goals, objectives and hook Lesson 1 Create new document and template Lesson 1 Check for understanding: Learners follow along with steps Lesson 2 Tools and usage Lesson 2 Learners follow along using key as a guide Lesson 2 Check for understanding “key” guide Lesson 3 Text columns and options Lesson 3 Check for understanding: Learners set up various columns on separate pages. Final Assessment Survey Monkey Quiz

FORMATIVE EVALUATION: The tutorial will be evaluated by the following: Peer Evaluation: The learners will be given a printout of the pages and write down what they think of the training as they are taking it. They will show and mark what has given them a good understanding of the training, any errors, or thoughts they come across.

SUMMARY This design plan is for me to use as a guide on creating my tutorial for training the learners how to effectively use Indesign and its many useful tools, functions and optimizing features. It highlights the significance of how this program training will improve the overall quality of work as well as the time management benefits. After the completion of this tutorial, the learners will have enough knowledge and confidence in creating new advertisements using Indesign as their main program.
