2 INTRODUCTION It is a known fact that most professionals leave an organisation due to lack of career growth. Active career development initiatives by a company is a key retention tool to keep the best talent within its fold. It is one of the greatest motivators to keep an employee happy and engaged. Career development become the concern of an employee and usually accepted as one of the importance activities of HRM. From the employees’ point of view career development initiatives gives them a clear focus about their career track. An organisation focusses on developing the career path of its employees boosts the morale and ultimately the productivity of its staff.

Career- is all the jobs that are held during one’s working life Career path – is the sequential pattern of jobs that forms one’s career Career goals – are the future positions one strives to reach as part of a career Career planning – is the process by which one selects career goals and the path to those goals Career development – the personal improvements one undertakes to achieve a personal career path.

Lowers turnover – increase employee loyalty to the organisation Satisfies employee needs – individual’s satisfaction with their career can be accomplish Furthers personal growth – an opportunity for employees to grow and advanced Taps employee potential – capable employees must be available to fill the new, bigger and more sophisticated job. Career opportunity – assist employees in determining their own future career needs

Career Education – increase employee awareness through a variety education technique. Eg: seminar and workshops Career Counselling – to help employees establish career goals and find appropriate career paths. Career Information – provides the specific job related information
