8.30.11 Drill: 1.If someone asks you where you are from, what is your response? 2.Do you think you will always live in this area? Why or why not?

Objective: SWBAT use vivid description to write a poem that exemplifies where they are from by examining a model HW: organize notebook portfolio notebook

George Ella Lyon

Grew up in Kentucky Was a teacher and poet Married and had children She’s about 70 years old Named after her mother’s brother

Activity continued… Using “Where I am From” as a model, you are going to write your own version of where you “are from.” Use the template as a guide. It should have the same amount of lines and follow a similar word pattern, but feel free to be creative. This will be the first assignment to be included in your writing portfolio. Before you begin, I want to read you a poem that I wrote using this model.

What can you tell about me after reading this poem? How did I use vivid details to describe where I was from?

Activity continued… Use a piece of notebook paper to write your poem. DO NOT put your name on the front of the poem. I will come around with a “sticky” so you can put your name on it. Some may be shared tomorrow, so avoid anything that is too personal for you to share.

Exit: 1.How does your poem differ from the response you wrote to the first drill question? 2.How would you describe the tone of your poem? Whimsical? Nostalgic?
