WG1: Understanding Chair: Dick Botteldooren Vice-chair: Tjeerd Adringa
2
WG1 mission statement A quest for the relationship between the physics of the ((sonic)) environment and the effect (neurobiological/perception/cognition)... linking the inner and outer world Beyond psycho-physics; new experiments From specific knowledge in perception, cognition, neurobiology,... to overall soundscape understanding; using modelling and simulation as a tool Focussing also on enabling technology
3
WG1 why? Better description to allow public, policy makers, designers, etc. to construct a (mental) image without being present Acquire knowledge on how persons perceive/interprete/evaluate soundscapes and why they do so Acquire and use further knowledge on health effects associated with multiple exposure Current state of working document
4
WG1 how? Sound source (varying detail) recognition/identification before sound quality The role of attention / activity / task / other senses / knowledge Cognition, emotion, and (personalised) meaning; expectance, experience Listeners as active participants, behavior, and coping SR AA CM Current state of working document
5
CM WG1 short term planning Competition to attract students (from Computational Intelligence) Joint workshop with WG3 and WG2 in Edinburgh Vocabulary, etc. (ISO WG) State of the art and possible approaches in sound recognition Workshop in Ghent (Belgium) April 27-28 2010, joint with ENNAH and followed by IOA/ABAV meeting Contributions from cogn. science and audit. perc. (invited experts) SR AA
6
WG1 short term planning Circulate information on planned experiments / ongoing projects / available data allowing to “hook on” experiments Start discussion groups on COST website G o t o h t t p : / / s o u n d s c a p e - c o s t. o r g a n d e n t e r y o u r p r o j e c t
7
WG1 long term planning Repository of tools for modelling and simulation Simulating sonic environments Auralisation of sonic environments (sonic summary) Modelling of virtual visitor soundscape creation Augmented measurements Gathering more relevant information on sonic env. Find research money
8
Soundscape who? Who is doing what? What can you offer to the group? Who do we need to attract / contact Current state of working document
9
