1 White Feather Author: Nancy McIntosh Pafford Incorporates activities that engage students in historical comprehension activities.

2 Have your group play the role of a news reporter and be prepare to report on the Cherokee village scene as the white soldiers come in Chapter 6. Be sure to include the views of from the Soldiers and the Cherokee. Be sure to include vivid descriptions of the various scenes. Each account should include both views of the soldiers and both sides of the Cherokee. Strategy “Breaking News”

3 Figurative Language Figurative language is a literary device that an author uses to make prose stronger. As figures of speech, similes and metaphors help readers visualize what is happening in the story. The author incorporates several examples of similes and metaphors in chapters one and two. Students will: *Write the simile or metaphor they encounter in the book. *Write down the two nouns that are being compared and describe how they are similar. *Create a drawing that illustrates the literal meaning of the words, thus emphasizing how figurative language helps words come alive. Strategy

4 Bio-Poem Have students create a bio-poem using the following format on the character of White Feather. Line 1: First Name Line2: Four traits that describe character Line 3: Relatives of… Line 4: One who loves… Line 5: One who feels… Line 6: One who needs… Line 7: One who fears… Line 8: One who gives… Line 9: Who would like to see… Line 10: Resident of… Strategy

5 Indian Removal Act of 1830 1.Give each student a copy of the Transcription of Indian Removal Act of 1830 and a copy of the Document Analysis sheet. 2. Using their copies of the proclamation, have students complete the document analysis sheet. Strategy

6 Diary 1.Using information from “White Feather” to complete your diary entry along the Trail of Tears from whichever perspective you choose. Complete the hand-out of your choice. Strategy

7 Screenplay Have students use this book to write their own screenplay. This may be done as an individual or team project. Once students have completed their writing project, you may wish to have them cast their play using either current screen stars or their classmates and friends. Have them explain why they selected the actors that they did. Strategy

8 White Feather by Nancy McIntosh Pafford About the author Nancy is a native of South Georgia and a retired school teacher. As a child she and her family traveled to Cherokee, NC on vacations where she attended the drama “Unto These Hills,” each year. It was during these visits that her love for the mountains and its culture was born. Through the years her heart has always been drawn to the Cherokee people and their land. In time she was inspired to tell the story through “White Feather.” Nancy retired and moved to Cherokee after becoming a widow.
