20 Narrative Writing Using Tone and Point of View
From prewriting plan to narrative! Look at the “outline sketch” of “Memories of Dating.”

21 It all starts with a plan…
Consider the “plan” that shows the “skeleton” of “Memories of Dating.” (on eBackpack, U2,L2) How is this plan different from the finished story?

22 Compare the Outline with the Finished Narrative
diction (choice of words), syntax (sentence construction), imagery (metaphors, similes, and other types of figurative language).

23 Narrative Writing Plan
Sketch out the basic ideas of what you know will happen. Then, develop each of your basic ideas using diction, syntax, and imagery. Write from a specific point of view, using tone to help your audience know how your narrator feels about the subject.

24 Point of View and Tone When you write from a 1st person point of view, you need to consider how your narrator feels about the topic. Choose words that convey the narrator’s feelings; Also consider: The age of your narrator, the time period, the social situation, and other factors that affect how your character sees the world around him/her.

25 Point of View and Tone For example:
If you are writing a narrative from the point of view of a pioneer boy who is helping his family move West, and you are about to cross a river, what sorts of things would the boy talk about in the narrative your are writing? How would you use diction, syntax, and imagery to get his feelings across?

26 Practice Narrative Writing with Tone and Point of View
We will work together in class to use a historical article, and we will write a narrative from the1st person point of view of a specific character using tone.
